VE Day 80 at White Row FARM: A Proper Somerset Celebration of Community, Courage, and Cake.

Updated: 3 hours ago

A shared moment of celebration here at White Row Farm Shop - Thursday 8th May

Join us here in Somerset from Monday, May 5th, to Thursday, May 8th, as we mark 80 years since Victory in Europe Day, a moment to reflect on peace, perseverance, and the power of community.

We’ll be flying the flags (quite literally) and bringing you a celebration full of nostalgic charm, great food, and a little wartime whimsy – all done the White Row way.

What's On:

From Monday to Thursday, enjoy the melodies of the 1940s as classic wartime songs play and Union Jack bunting decorates the farm.

Steve, the owner, will also park one of his cherished vintage tractors—the perfect spot for a nostalgic photo.

Fish & Chip Special

Our fish and chip lunch special—prime hake fillet, chips, and mushy peas—will be available for longer hours on Thursday, 8th May, from 12 noon to 8 pm.

Not many people realise that fish and chips were vital to the war effort during both the First and Second World Wars. Sir Winston Churchill called the humble dish "our good companions" and refused to ration it, knowing how much it lifted the nation’s spirits.

Rationing was introduced to ensure everyone had their fair share of essentials like sugar, meat, flour, butter, margarine, and milk. The Ministry of Food issued ration books to everyone, young and old alike, each one filled with coupons for set amounts of food from local shops. Even the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, had her own ration book.

It was a time of great hardship, but also great community – a reminder of how sharing, fairness, and resilience can carry us through.
