The Joy of Seasonal Eating: Fresh, Homegrown Veg in Our Farm Shop

As the cooler months set in, there’s something truly comforting about cooking with fresh, seasonal vegetables. We have some beautiful autumn and winter produce that celebrates the bounty of the season, ready for you to enjoy in your favourite dishes. Grown here at the farm, picked daily AND all chemical free!

What’s in Season?

Our shelves are full of vegetables that capture the essence of this time of year. Here’s a look at what’s available for you.

  • Leeks – With their delicate flavour, leeks are perfect in warming soups, hearty stews, or roasted for an earthy sweetness.

  • Brussels Sprouts – A classic winter staple that’s versatile enough to be sautéed, roasted, or even added raw to salads for a crunchy twist.

  • Carrots – Bright, sweet, and full of nutrients, carrots are lovely roasted, grated into salads, or used as a base in soups and stocks.

  • Cauliflower and Romanesco – Both of these make an excellent addition to any meal, roasted until golden or added to curries and casseroles for extra depth.

  • Purple Sprouting Broccoli – Packed with flavour and nutrition, this broccoli adds colour and taste to any plate, from stir-fries to side dishes.

  • Beetroot – Known for its deep, earthy flavour, beetroot can be roasted, pickled, or grated into salads for a burst of colour.

  • Sagitta Potatoes – These spuds are wonderful for roasting, baking, or mashing – an absolute comfort food essential.

  • Swede – This humble root is lovely when mashed with butter, added to stews, or roasted for a mellow sweetness that shines in winter dishes.

  • January King Cabbages – With their slightly sweet flavour, these cabbages are great for slaws, sautés, or stuffed with hearty fillings.

  • Tender Greens and Kale – These nutritious greens add a fresh, slightly peppery taste to salads, stews, or simply sautéed with garlic.

  • Calabrese – This Italian variety of broccoli is mild and tender, perfect for roasting or adding to pasta dishes.

Eating seasonally is not only great for supporting local growers (like us!). It’s a way to elevate both taste and nutrition in your meals. Produce picked at it’s peak offers fuller flavours and higher nutrient content as it hasn’t travelled far to reach your plate. Plus, it’s nature’s way of giving us exactly what we crave for this time of year – think comforting roots and leafy greens that make perfect soups, stews, and roasts when the weather turns chilly.
